Money, Money, Money...

I've been thinking a lot about African currencies this week, trying to make sense of cents, centavos, centimes, centimos, and centesimi. Some regions keep things relatively simple. The West Africans tend to use francs (at least those with a French colonial past). East Africans shell out shillings: There's the Somali shilling, Kenyan shilling, Tanzanian shilling, Djibouti shilling and Burundi shilling. They're all different for now, but there's talk of a single East African shilling, that will perform much like the current West African and Central African franc.

For Christmas I made my youngest son a millionaire, by handing him a million dollar note from Zimbabwe. I kept the fifty trillion dollar note myself (don't tell him). Needless to say with all those zeros, Zimbabwe now uses the US$ instead. This is working out just fine, but change is a problem, and usually handed out in the form of chips or sweets to round it up.

Most currencies in Africa follow the traditional decimal pattern. In Gambia, 100 bututs = 1 dalasi and in Malawi, 100 tambala = 1 kwacha. But there are two currencies that like to keep people on their mathematical toes and diverge from the decimal norm -- in Mauritania 5 khoums = 1 Ouguiya, and in Madagascar 5 iraimbilanja = 1 ariary.

And my favorite African currency for no other reason than I like the sound of it? Has to be the Mozambican metical, closely followed by the Lesotho loti.
